‘Transformers 4′ Approved for Michigan Film Tax Incentives

The Michigan Film Tax Incentive has been approved for the major movie production of ‘Transformers 4′ it was announced today by the Michigan Film Office. According to the Detroit Free Press the film will receive up to $20 million on an anticipated film budget spend of $82 million in the State of Michigan including the City of Detroit.

The fourth installment of the of the successful Hollywood film franchise from Paramount Pictures will be the third of the series to shoot in Detroit. Previous filming of the Transformers movies have included ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ in 2011. The original Transformer film also shot in Detroit in 2007.

‘Transformers 4′ will have a much larger film presence and production spend in the state than its predecessors which for ‘Dark of the Moon’ received $6MM on a $17MM film budget in state spend to support the growing Michigan film industry.

Dreamworks ‘Need For Speed’ to Film in Michigan

Dreamworks SKG will bring ‘Need For Speed’ video game to life as a film to be shot in Michigan in 2013.

The movie will be directed by Scott Waugh (‘Men of Valor’) and will star:

Dakota Johnson

Michael Keaton

The film is reported to have earned approval for a Michigan film tax credit of $1,370,852 on an in-state spend of $4,993,623.

Michigan Increases Cap on Film Tax Credit to $50 Million

The State of Michigan has increased its film tax incentives to a new cap of $50 Million for fiscal year 2013. Increase was by agreement to double the $25 million cap initiated by Governor Rick Snyder. The legislature convinced him to double the cap to support the film industry in Michigan. This is a welcome sign of support for Michigan filmmakers. Carrie Jones, the Michigan Film Office Director, has just released the Michigan Film Office 2010 Annual Report. The report is required by regulation and details the Michigan film tax incentive activity for the year. Facts and figures shed light on the films and amounts spent and the film incentive approved for the growing Michigan film and entertainment industry.

The key fact for 2010: $293 Million was spent by productions shooting in Michigan. $115 Million in Michigan film incentives were given as a rebate on the expenditures. A net inward spend of $178 Million.

Let us repeat this math as so many fail to grasp its simplicity: $293 Million inward spend – $115 Million rebate on the spend = $178 Million in net inward production spending.

These are the hard facts the opponents and the destroyer of a growing and flourishing creative industry do not want you to know. The movie has a film budget of $105 Million and has been reported it will shoot on the stages at Raleigh Michigan Studios in Pontiac, the Michigan film industry revitalized site of a GM Truck Plant. Johnny Depp is in talks to star in what is being called the biggest film budget to be spent in Michigan since the inception of the incentive. The film would be an immense boost to the Michigan film industry, further cementing Michigan’s place atop the world of film locations.
