Unity Studios Set to Open in Allen Park

Unity Studios – City of Allen Park Announces Film & Television Studio

City of Allen Park officials announced a major movie studio deal Tuesday that will create a $146-million, full-service movie, television and new media production studio. Project is named Unity Studios. Unity Studios on Facebook

The factory will be built on 104 acres in Allen Park and include 750,000 square feet of production, post-production and production support services facilities with eight sound stages.

Hollywood production executive Jimmy Lifton is leading the project. A native of the Detroit area and founder of Oracle Post, a production studio based in Burbank and Santa Monica, Calif., he will join Allen Park officials this afternoon to unveil the plans.

The studio will employ “thousands” of skilled workers, most of them in unionized trades, a spokesman for the project said. Residents of Allen Park and “laid off union workers from across the region will get first shot at the jobs,” the spokesman, Roger Martin, said Monday morning.

Part of the studio will occupy a former Visteon research and development center at 16630 Southfield Road in Allen Park.

No new taxes are needed to support the project, Martin said. But a spokeswoman for the Michigan Economic Development Corp. said the project may qualify for Michigan Economic Growth Authority tax incentives. Michigan’s lucrative tax rebates for movie production work, worth up to 42% of qualifying production costs, was essential in getting the project for the state.

Allen Park Mayor Gary Burtka said, “This announcement amounts to an economic development blockbuster for the city, Wayne County and state.

“During the current recession, no region in Michigan — and perhaps no region in the entire nation — has been hit harder economically than Downriver. It represents new hope and, more importantly, job opportunities for thousands of Allen Park and Wayne County residents and autoworkers who have lost their jobs.”

  1. I see that there new educational opportunities; however, I would like to know whether there will be jobs before the new facility is finished. I am looking at being unemployed within the next couple of weeks to a month due to this current economy, and I am looking for an opportunity that is long lasting, or at least financially. I have an associate degree, but I found nothing in my field. I already have acting experience through the many theater venues in Detroit, but had to settle in a job at a camera store that is now closing. My question is rather simple: will there be jobs in the next few months that satify what this education will be asked of?

  12. I am an General Motors laid off employee with 21 years of experience, and have been in the carpenters union also for 21 years. We built all the displays for the auto shows where I worked for GM. This movie studios job would be right up my alley. I was part of the stage hand union so I know a lot about the work that is performed for movie production. This would be a huge oppertinuty for myself and my family,if I were to land a movie studio job. Thank you for listening and let me please be considered for employment.

  23. Currently, I run a labor agency that seeks to put general laborers to work. Is there opportunity for the unskilled labor provider? What kind of support will the skilled trades need? Has there been an interest in having a provider on hand just in case it is needed? I’d like to help Unity Studios prepare for the future by building a relationship now. How should I speak with?

  24. They are just here for the tax break. They are bringing their own people here. The tuition will start from $15,000 for their training. All of these people that are laid off and have lost their jobs, can not afford to pay that amount and more. Where are the jobs for all of the unemployed here in Michigan? There are none. Check the newspaper. They need to leave and go back to California and not use our state for the tax break. Over 2,000 people were at the Unity meeting and were told that they needed only training and no jobs. Some were told they needed $30,000 to start training. What a scam!!!!

  35. Unless you can guarantee that work that is shot in your studios will stay for post-production in Michigan, it will face the same problems we have now. Extremely talented individuals layed-off because nobody is keeping the business local. There is NO reason, and I mean NONE, that coloring, editing, visual effects and finishing cannot be accomplished by equally talented in-state staff.

You must guarantee that a) people here that lost jobs in this industry should be first in line for employment and b) that post work is not going back out to L.A. or N.Y.

This is a very serious issue that I NEVER see addressed by anyone. All I see is the suggestion of it, but never a plan for it.
